1950-1960 Vintage Made of “MOYGASHEL”s True Pure Irish Linen Fabric Made British Sports Blazer
高級リネンの代名詞として、最上級の証の「アイリッシュリネン」。
しかしアイルランドでのリネン生産は、原料となるフラックス(flax=亜麻)の栽培が60年以上も前の1960年代に途絶え、フラックスから糸を紡ぐ紡績も、1990年頃までに全く行われなくなってしまいました。
Irish linen is synonymous with luxury linen and is a sign of the highest quality.
However, the cultivation of flax, the raw material for linen production in Ireland, ceased more than 60 years ago in the 1960s, and the spinning of linen from flax ceased around 1990.
本来アイリッシュリネンは、ベルギーから栽培法が伝わり、アイルランド北部のアルスター(Ulster)地方(ドニゴール(Donagal)州やハードマンズ(Herdmans)社のあったティロン(Tyrone)州など9州）でさかんに栽培されていたフラックスを、アイルランドで紡績して糸を紡ぎ、アイルランドで織り上げたものでした。
今アイリッシュリネンとして流通している物は、主にフランスやベルギーのフラックスを、中国などで糸に紡ぎ、アイリッシュ・リネン・ギルドに加盟している業社と、その業者が認可した工場(アイルランド以外の国の方が多い）で織り上げたものです。
Originally, Irish linen was made by spinning flax, which was cultivated in Ulster in the north of Ireland (Donagal and Tyrone, where Herdmans was located), into yarn and weaving it in Ireland.
Nowadays, Irish linen is mainly made from flax from France and Belgium, spun into yarn in China and other countries, and woven in Irish Linen Guild member companies and their authorized mills (often outside of Ireland).
アイリッシュ・リネン・ギルドは、「フラックスの栽培も糸の紡績も自分達では行っていない」という事をHPに明記しています。
つまり、今手に入る「アイリッシュリネン」は、アイルランドとは全く関係のないものまでを含む、ブランドとしての「アイリッシュリネン」という商標のみを意味する名称だという事です。その実態は「アイリッシュリネン」と名乗っているだけのフレンチリネンやベルギーリネン、あるいはチャイニーズリネンだということです。
The Irish Linen Guild clearly states on their website that they do not grow the flax or spin the yarn themselves.
In other words, the “Irish Linen” available today is just a brand name that includes products that have nothing to do with Ireland, but only with the “Irish Linen” trademark. The reality is that it is just French linen, Belgian linen, or Chinese linen that calls itself “Irish linen”.
「アイリッシュリネン」の評価を不動のものにしたのはアイルランドで栽培された原料のフラックス自体の素晴らしさはもちろんの事ですが、そのフラックスから細番手の糸を作り出せる高い紡績技術の蓄積でした。
What made the reputation of Irish linen so strong was, of course, the excellence of the raw material, flax, grown in Ireland, but it was also the accumulation of high spinning techniques that could produce fine yarns from the flax.
北アイルランド中央のミッド・アルスター(Mid-Ulster)、Tyrone県のMoygashelでは17世紀初頭から亜麻の栽培が行われ、有名なMoygashel Linen Millsが1780年代に設立されました。
貴族階級の麻布の製造業者としてスタートした Moygashelリネンは、家具や衣服に使用するために世界中に輸出された高品質のブランドで、20世紀半ばまでは、十分に確立されたグローバル市場に様々なリネン製品を送り出していました。
In Moygashel, Mid-Ulster, County Tyrone in central Northern Ireland, flax has been cultivated since the early 17th century and the famous Moygashel Linen Mills was established in the 1780s.
Starting as a manufacturer of linen for the aristocracy, Moygashel Linen was a high quality brand that was exported worldwide for use in furniture and clothing, and by the mid-20th century was offering a variety of linen products to a well established global market.
しかし、Moygashel社も、同じアイルランドのリネン紡績企業のハードマンズ(Herdmans)社と同じく、アイルランドでのフラックス栽培の消滅による原料枯渇と、大量生産市場への対応ができなかったため業績が不安定化。何度かの買収を経て、創業の地のMoygashel Linen Millsは閉鎖され、[The Linen Green]というショッピングセンターとなりました。Moygashelのブランドは、[Ulster&Weavers]と言うホームファニシングの会社の中の上級インテリアファブリックとして残るのみとなり、アイルランドでのピュアな「アイリッシュリネン」の歴史は閉じられてしまいました。
However, like the Irish linen spinning company Herdmans, Moygashel’s business became unstable due to the depletion of raw materials caused by the disappearance of flax cultivation in Ireland and the inability to respond to the mass production market. After several acquisitions, the Moygashel Linen Mills, where the company was founded, was closed down and turned into a shopping center called [The Linen Green].
The Moygashel brand remained only as a premium interior fabric in a home furnishing company called [Ulster & Weavers], and the history of pure “Irish linen” in Ireland was closed.
こうして今では幕を閉じてしまった「本物」の「アイリッシュリネン」はどれほど望まれても、資金を投入しても、新たには手に入れることの叶わない物となりました。
15～6年ほど前に、あるラグジュアリーブランドが復活させようとしましたが叶わず、せめて糸を手に入れようと探しましたが見つけることもできなかったようです。現存する「アイリッシュリネン」は日本の滋賀にある林与が持っているたった3トンほどのヴィンテージのみなのかもしれないとの事です。
And so the curtain has fallen on the “real” Irish linen, which no matter how much you want it or how much money you put into it, you just can’t get it again.
About 15-6 years ago, a luxury brand tried to revive it, but was unable to do so, and searched for the yarn, but could not find it. It seems that the only vintage Irish linen in existence may be the 3 tonnes owned by Hayashiyo in Shiga, Japan.
40年ほど前に仕入れられたその貴重な140番手(麻番手＝綿の50番手ぐらい)の糸は、麻と思えない柔らかさの糸ですぐに切れてしまうので1日かかって50cmという超低速のシャトル織機で織り上げ、縫製の際もミシンの送り歯や針で叩かれることにも耐えられない繊細なもの。
だからハンドロールで優しく丁寧に仕上げられた無地のハンカチが、45cm角のもので12,000-20,000円。
The precious 140-count yarn that Hayashiyo purchased in the 1970s (hemp count = about the 50th count of cotton) is so soft that it is hard to believe it is hemp, and it breaks easily.
That’s why the fabric was woven on a very slow shuttle loom that could weave only 50cm in a day. When sewing, it is too delicate to withstand the beating of a sewing machine’s feed teeth and needle.
That’s why a hand-rolled, hand-sewn and gently and carefully finished plain handkerchief costs USD150.00-200.00 for a 45cm square.
番手の低い40番手の生地でさえ生地値で1mあたり60,000円以上もするのですから、ジャケットを「本物」の「アイリッシュリネン」で仕立てることなど、今では夢想するしかないものですし、値段は想像するのも恐ろしい物になりそうです。
Even a low 40 count fabric can cost over USD650.00 per meter. The idea of having a jacket made of “real” Irish linen is something that can only be dreamed of nowadays, and the prices can be frightening to imagine.
そんな中で、まだ「本物」の「アイリッシュリネン」が作られていた頃のヴィンテージの発見こそが、どんなに望んでも手にすることのできない物を、手にいれられる唯一の方法に違いありません。
In such a situation, discovering vintage Irish linen from the time when “real” Irish linen was still being made must be the only way to get what you can never have, no matter how much you want it.
アイルランドで栽培し、紡績を行い、製織されたピュアなアイリッシュリネンが作られていた、1950-1960年代のアイルランド、Moygashelの生地で仕立てられたジャケットです。

これが麻？と思ってしまうほど軽く柔らかく繊細な手触り。織り自体もリラックスした緩めのふくよかなものですが、糸も100番手以上の細番手のもので織られた生地は、「アイリッシュリネン」の群を抜く特性であり魅力の「柔らかさ」を実感できます。
Is this linen? It is so light, soft, and delicate to the touch that you would think it was linen. The weave itself is relaxed, loose, and full, but the fabric woven with fine count yarns of 100 count or more allows you to feel the “softness” that is the outstanding characteristic and appeal of “Irish linen.

前身頃のヘムに丸みを加え、肩のフォルムを調整し、コバのステッチを全て解いて、ヘムにふくよかな柔らかさを持たせ、ラスティックコットンのライナーを全て手でまつり付けて空気を含むふくよかな表情にALTERATIONしたジャケットです。
This jacket is made by adding roundness to the hem of the front, adjusting the shape of the shoulders, undoing all the stitching on the coba to give the hem a fuller, softer look, and ALTERATION of the rustic cotton liner, which is all hand-patted to give it a fuller, airier look.
手仕事だからこその変則仕様のベントや切羽は、手縫い皺も美しい柔らかな仕様です。袖は幅を調整するとともにに開きを作り、着こなしの変化の楽しさが何倍にも広がる表情を加えました。
The irregularly designed vents and wings, which are the result of handwork, are soft with beautiful hand-sewn wrinkles. The width of the sleeves can be adjusted and the openings created, adding a look that will expand the enjoyment of wearing it many times over.
元からあったボタンホールも糸を解き、全てフレンチリネンのコードヤーンでかがり直したハンドホールです。キュプラのライニングと取り替えた、ラスティックなコットンブロードは、適度な張りとシワ感が有り、インドで織られた素朴な糸の表情が魅力です。手でまつりつけたライナーの生地感と色のコントラストと清潔感。柔らかな縫い皺は、手仕事ゆえのふくよかさ。
The original buttonholes have been unthreaded and re-braided with French linen cord yarn. The rustic cotton broadcloth, which has been replaced with cupro lining, has moderate tension and wrinkles, and the rustic look of the yarn woven in India is attractive. The hand-patted liner gives the fabric texture, color contrast, and clean feeling. The soft stitching and wrinkles are the result of handwork.

It is filled with the thoughts of craftsmen and designers, not just looking for profit.This was completed through a time-consuming work process that would normally be impossible.
