Middle of 20th Century Vintage Faded Indigo Plaid French Cotton “KELSCH” Fabric Made Lot of Patches & Darning Work Tailor Jacket

1930-1960年頃に作られたフランスのIndigo糸を使ったチェック生地(KELSCH)を何種類か組み合わせて作ったジャケット。

This jacket was made by combining several types of check fabric (KELSCH ) made with Indigo yarn from France around 1930-1960.

元々の“KELSCH”はフランスのアルザス地方や、そこからほど近いライン川沿いのドイツ、スイスの一部地方で作り続けられているリネン生地のこと。

LinenやHempが栽培されていたこの地方は、woad(青)やmadder(赤)などの染料が取れる植物の栽培も盛んで、それらを組み合わせてこの地方独特の生地が作られていました。

The original “KELSCHE” is a linen fabric that has been produced in Alsace, France, and some parts of Germany and Switzerland along the Rhine River, which is not far from Alsace.

In this region where Linen and Hemp were cultivated, plants that produce dyes such as woad (blue) and madder (red) were also widely grown, and these plants were combined to produce fabrics unique to this region.

農家が自分達で栽培したLinenを手紡ぎで糸にして、同じく自家製の染料で染めて作った格子柄。その柄は各家庭でそれぞれに自分達の柄を考え、ブルーはプロテスタント、赤はカソリックといった宗派も表す家固有のもの。

This plaid pattern is made by hand-spinning linen grown by the farmers themselves and dyeing it with home-made dyes. Each family has its own unique pattern, which may be Protestant (blue) or Catholic (red), and each family also represents its own religious denomination.

家庭の小さな手織り機で織られる生地は、幅も狭く、大きな物を作るためには生地をたくさん接ぐ事が必要なので、この生地で主に作られたのは大きめのピローケースやデュべ(マットレスカバー)など。

The fabric woven on small handlooms at home is narrow, and it is necessary to join many pieces of fabric together to make a large item, so the fabric was mainly used to make large pillowcases and duvets (mattress covers).

オリジナルの“KELSCH”は、不揃いな手紡ぎのリネンの糸と、素朴な手織りの風合いや、天然インディゴで染められた青や、茜の赤といった自然染料の色合いと生成りが組み合わさった素朴ながら洗練された織柄を持っています。

The original “KELSCH” has a simple yet sophisticated weave pattern that combines uneven hand-spun linen yarns, a rustic hand-woven texture, and natural dye colors such as indigo-dyed blue and Akane’s red, with a raw color.

しかし“KELSCH”は高い評価と人気に対して、家庭での工芸品に近い作り方のため価格も高く、ほとんどが自家用のため流通量も極少という状態。そのため風合いを模して綿素材のものが作られ始め、それらの生地も総称として“KELSCH”と呼ばれるようになりました。

However, despite the high reputation and popularity of “KELSCH”, its price was high because it was made in a way similar to home crafts, and its distribution was very small because most of it was for private use. Therefore, cotton fabrics began to be made to imitate the texture, and these fabrics also came to be called “KELSCH” as a general term.

この1枚は、そのようにして作られた1930-1960年頃のvintageのコットンの“KELSCH”を数種類組み合わせて作ったジャケットです。

裏をつけて2重にしたうえで、内側を手で掬い縫いして身頃に縫い付ける事で、丸みとふくよかな質感のあるフォルムにしたポケット。

The pockets are double-lined and then hand scoop-stitched on the inside and sewn to the body to create a rounded and full-textured form.

ダメージのパッチ、ダーニング、穴かがり、刺し子。新たに作られた服には逆立ちしても手に入れられない、VINTAGEの魅力と風合いが今と結びついたハイブリッドは、セピア色の写真の世界を懐かしむだけの服とは一線を画します。

Patches of damage, darning, hole cutting, and stitching. Unobtainable in a newly created garment standing on its head, the hybrid of VINTAGE’s charm and texture combined with the present is distinctly different from clothes that only nostalgically recall the sepia-toned world of photographs.

チョイスしたボタンはフランスの、vintageやantiqueの動物のモチーフが浮き彫りで象られた金属のボタン。

Vintageボタンの中でも1番人気が高く、1つがビッグマック2個分ぐらいが相場のフランスのハンティングジャケットに使われていたボタン。あえて様々な素材と、いろんな動物のモチーフをランダムに選んで縫い付けています。

The buttons selected are French metal buttons with animal motifs of vintage and antique designs in relief.

These buttons are the most popular among Vintage buttons, and were used for French hunting jackets, where one button is about the price of two Big Macs. Various materials and motifs of animals are randomly selected and sewn on.
