今なお世界のリネン原料のフラックス（亜麻）生産の70％以上を生み出し続けるフランスは、文字通りのリネン大国です。栽培には温帯から熱帯の気候を必要とするため、綿の栽培が難しいフランスの気候に適した亜麻は、衣類のみならずシーツなどの寝具や寝間着などのホームリネンから、テーブルクロスやナプキンなどのテーブルリネンにも使われフランス人にとっては綿以上に生活に密着した最も身近な繊維です。

近年では中国などの紡績技術の発展により、原料栽培以外の工程（特に潤紡よる紡糸はほとんど中国）はフランス以外で行われ、リネンを糸にする紡績工程は国外がほとんどとなりました。しかし、この生地が作られた100年以上も前の時代では、フランス国内で栽培、紡績、製織された真正のフレンチリネンと言える生地が作られていました。

In recent years, with the development of spinning technology in China and other countries, most of the processes other than the cultivation of raw materials (especially spinning by Junbun in China) are carried out outside of France, and the spinning process to turn linen into yarn is now mostly done outside of France. However, more than 100 years ago, when this fabric was produced, the fabric was grown, spun, and woven in France and could be called a genuine French linen.

A 1950s vintage linen fabric with a light texture unique to the linen powerhouse of France. This SALT & PEPPER linen is woven with medium gray and charcoal gray melange yarn warp and medium gray weft yarns.

フランスで昔、工場や農作業等の仕事着や、小、中学校で図工授業の時の上っぱりに採用されていた、SALT & PEPPERの生地。チャコールやミディアムグレーをベースにしたメランジ糸を組み合わせた生地の色合いは、汚れが目立ちにくいという理由の機能以上に、奥行きのある味わい深さの魅力に溢れています。

SALT & PEPPER fabric was used in France in the past for work clothes in factories and farm work, etc., and for upper garments during arts and crafts classes at elementary and junior high schools. The coloring of the fabric, which is a combination of charcoal and medium gray-based melange yarns, is more than just functional for the reason that it does not show dirt easily; it is full of the charm of depth and tastefulness.

時間を経たvintage故の生地の変化。煤汚れや日焼けによる色斑と枯れた感触は古い生地ならではの味わい。

この生地を使って製作した、フランス海軍“Marine Nationale”の下士官のテイラー仕立てのワークジャケットをベースに作ったコート／ジャケット。

This coat/jacket is based on the tailored work jacket of a junior officer of the French Navy “Marine Nationale”, which was made using this fabric.

作業時の上っ張りとして仕立てられたものとは思えないような仕立て。このころならではの美意識が注がれた、コンパクトなフィット感のコート／ジャケットです。

It is tailored in such a way that it is hard to believe that it was tailored as an upper layer for work. This is a compact fitted coat/jacket with a sense of beauty that is unique to this period.

海軍らしさを表す、鋭角のピークドラペルの凛々しい襟周りの顔つき。

襟やヘムへは、同じ風合いのリネン生地をpatch。派手な継ぎはぎを避けて、ステッチの控えめなコントラストだけが主張する大人の魅せるアクセント。ポケットにも、アクセントのpatchを。

The dignified face around the collar with sharply angled peaked lapels that expresses a nautical look.

The collar and hems are patched with linen fabric of the same texture, avoiding showy joints, with only a discreet contrast in stitching to create an appealing accent for adults. Pockets also have patches for accent.

襟を囲むpatchの1.2-1.5mmの細かな手のステッチ。全て手かがりのボタンホール。手の温もりや素朴さとは全く違う乾いた手仕事。でもその自然な乱れが作り出す表情は、ミシンには作り出せない味を生む。裏えりを縫うのもリネンのハンドステッチでの千鳥ステッチ。

1.2-1.5mm fine hand stitching on PATCH surrounding the collar.　Dry handwork that is completely different from the warmth and simplicity of the hand. However, the expression created by the natural disorder of the handwork gives it a taste that cannot be created by a sewing machine.

原型となった形は合わせは深いものの、4ボタンのシングルのジャケットだったもの。その深い合わせを活かして、ボタンホールを作ってダブルに変更したものがベースです。前身頃の見返しを止めつけるのもハンドステッチのアレンジで。

The original shape was a single jacket with four buttons, although the lap was deep. The base was a double jacket with buttonholes made to take advantage of the deep fit. Hand stitching was also arranged to fasten the front turnover.

アンティーク生地で包んだreinforced buttonの並ぶ前身頃のfacingは、表から見えませんが、なかなか趣のある姿。

The front facing, lined with reinforced buttons wrapped in antique fabric, is not visible from the front, but has quite an atmospheric appearance.

ボタンは1930年台のフランスのヴィンテージのbakelite(フェノール樹脂)。1872年の発明後、1907年から工業生産が開始され食器やキッチン用品、ボタン、時計、アクセサリーに多用された世界初の合成樹脂でしたが、その後ナイロンやフッ素樹脂など成型性、可塑性、コストに優れた樹脂が発明されbakeliteのボタン製造などは途絶えました。

The buttons are made of bakelite (phenolic resin), a French vintage from the 1930’s. After its invention in 1872, industrial production began in 1907, and it was the world’s first synthetic resin widely used for tableware, kitchenware, buttons, watches, and accessories. However, the invention of nylon, fluoropolymers, and other resins with superior moldability, plasticity, and cost performance led to the discontinuation of bakelite button production.

一般的な樹脂と異なり、射出成形で作られる丸みのある輪郭と、独特の濁りのある色合い。見た目に反してしっかりした質感と重みを兼ね備えた、味わい深さを持ったボタンです。

Unlike ordinary resin, this button has a rounded outline made by injection molding and a unique muddy hue. Contrary to its appearance, this button has both a solid texture and weight, and has a deep sense of taste.
