British Vintage Wool Flannel Chalk Stripe Fabric Made Double Breasted Jacket

フランネルは平織りあるいは綾織の生地の表面を起毛させたものの総称なのですが、フラノと略されればウールの生地を、ネルと略せばコットンの生地を思い浮かべる方が多いのではないかと思います。

Flannel is a general term for plain or twill weave fabrics with a brushed surface, but I think most people would think of wool fabric when it is abbreviated to flannel, and cotton fabric when it is abbreviated to flannel.

16世紀頃ぐらいから英国のウェールズで作り始められたと言われるこの生地も、もちろん最初はウールで作られたものでした。現代につながる織物の多くを生み出した英国やフランスなどでは、身近で産出される繊維は羊毛と亜麻(リネン)と麻(ヘンプ)だけで、寒冷な気候では栽培できず、輸入に頼る綿素材が、いろんなものに使えるほど普及されるのには、17世紀以降の英国による東インド会社でのインド綿貿易の成功を待たなければなりませんでした。

This fabric, which is said to have begun to be produced in Wales, England, around the 16th century, was of course originally made from wool. In countries like England and France, which produced many of the textiles that we use today, the only fibers that were locally produced were wool, linen, and hemp, which cannot be grown in cold climates and so had to be imported. It was not until the success of the British East India Company’s trade with India in the 17th century that cotton became widespread enough to be used for a variety of purposes.

綿をベースとしたネルが農民、屈強な男性などブルーカラーの労働者の象徴であり、グランジやラップ、スケーターなどパンクや反抗的なファッションの表現手段として位置付けられる一方で、ウールをベースとしたフラノはアイビーリーグ大学の制服のブレザーや、サビルロウで仕立てられるスーツの生地など、上流階級の重厚さや上品さを象徴する代表になっているとう言う対比は、とても面白い落差ではないでしょうか。

While cotton-based flannel is a symbol of blue-collar workers such as farmers and strong men, and is positioned as a means of expressing punk and rebellious fashion such as grunge, rap, and skater fashion, wool-based flannel is a representative symbol of the dignity and elegance of the upper class, as seen in the blazers worn at Ivy League universities and the fabric of suits tailored on Savile Row.This contrast is quite interesting, isn’t it?

そういった上流階級の重厚さや上品さを象徴する英国生地のvintage、その中でも特に落ち着いた印象のネービーのチョークストライプを使って、フランス海軍“Marine Nationale”の下士官のテイラー仕立てのワークジャケットをベースに作ったコート／ジャケット。

This coat/jacket is made using vintage British fabrics, which symbolize the dignity and elegance of the upper class, and in particular navy chalk stripes, which give it a particularly subdued impression, and is based on a work jacket tailored for a non-commissioned officer of the French Navy, the Marine Nationale.

ベースにしたジャケットは、作業時の上っ張りとして仕立てられたものとは思えないような仕立て。このころならではの美意識が注がれた、コンパクトなフィット感のコート／ジャケットです。

The jacket that served as the base is so well-made that it’s hard to believe it was made as a work jacket. It’s a compact-fitting coat/jacket that embodies the aesthetic sense unique to that time.

海軍らしさを表す、鋭角のピークドラペルの凛々しい襟周りの顔つき。

The sharp peak lapels give the collar a dignified look that is characteristic of the navy.

原型となった形は合わせは深いものの、4ボタンのシングルのジャケットだったもの。その深い合わせを活かして、ボタンホールを作ってダブルに変更したものがベースです。前身頃の見返しを止めつけるのもハンドステッチのアレンジで。

The original shape was a single jacket with four buttons, although the lap was deep. The base was a double jacket with buttonholes made to take advantage of the deep fit. Hand stitching was also arranged to fasten the front turnover.

アンティーク生地で包んだreinforced buttonの並ぶ前身頃のfacingは、表から見えませんが、なかなか趣のある姿。

The front facing, lined with reinforced buttons wrapped in antique fabric, is not visible from the front, but has quite an atmospheric appearance.

全て手かがりのボタンホール。手の温もりや素朴さとは全く違う乾いた手仕事。でもその自然な乱れが作り出す表情は、ミシンには作り出せない味を生む。

All buttonholes are hand-sewn. This is a dry, handcrafted process that is completely different from the warmth and simplicity of the hands. However, the natural irregularities create a unique look that cannot be achieved by machine sewing.

襟を立てて様になるしっかりしたシルエット。ワークウェアでありながらも、合わせの身返しにははりを持たせ、襟裏には細かなステッチの入るテーラー仕立てを意識した造り。

ライニングしたラスティックなコットンブロードは、適度な張りとシワ感が有り、素朴な糸の表情が魅力です。

The rustic cotton broadcloth lining has just the right amount of tension and wrinkle, and the rustic look of the yarn is appealing.

裏地と表地の洗いざらしの生み出すしわ、生成りの清潔感のあるコントラスト。手仕事だからこその、手縫い皺も美しい柔らかな仕様です。

The wrinkles created by the washed lining and outer fabric create a clean contrast with the natural color. The hand-sewn wrinkles are a beautiful, soft feature that can only be achieved by handwork.

ポケットは裏地をつけて手縫いで取り付け、丸みと緩やかな立体感のあるポケットに。
