French Vintage DeadStock Black Pigment Coated Indigo Dyed Linen “Villette” Fabric Made Maquignon Chore Worker Coat
撚り杢のソルト＆ペッパー生地のアトリエコートやフレンチサージやモールスキンのカバーオールやワークパンツ、太畝ピケのハンティングジャケットなど、独自のスタイルを見せながらも、現代に通用するモダンさを持ったスタイリッシュなワークウエアが勢ぞろいする中で、全く違った魅力を持つ仕事着がフランスにはありました。
While there was a wide selection of stylish workwear that showed off their own unique style but was also modern and relevant today, such as atelier coats made from twisted heathered salt and pepper fabric, coveralls and work pants made from French serge or moleskin, and hunting jackets made from wide-wale piqué, France also had workwear with a completely different appeal.
そんなフランスを代表する仕事着の1つ、Villetteと呼ばれたインディゴリネンの生地で作られた、Maquignonと呼ばれた牧畜業(馬や牛の放牧や仲買い人)や家畜・食肉市場に携わった人々の仕事着をモチーフに製作したコートです。
This coat is made from indigo linen fabric called Villette, one of the most representative workwear in France, and is based on the workwear worn by Maquignon, who worked in the livestock industry (horse and cattle grazing and brokerage) and livestock and meat markets.
Maquignonは元々オランダ語のmakelare(仲介や交渉）から派生した名称で、当初は馬のディーラーを指していましたが、やがて馬主や飼育業者までを指す言葉となっていっきました。そのMaquignonが仕事で着用していたオーバーコートの仕事着が原型です。
Maquignon was originally derived from the Dutch word makelare (intermediary or negotiation), which initially referred to horse dealers, but eventually came to mean horse owners and breeders. Its prototype was the overcoat work clothes worn by Maquignon at work.
Maquignonの伝統的な服装は、主に実用的な理由と職業上の理由から黒色で、農民や農作業労働者のインディゴブルーのリネンのbiaudeとは区別される存在で、同じく黒色のフェルトの帽子と組み合わせて制服的に識別される目印でもありました。
The traditional Maquignon dress was black, primarily for practical and professional reasons, to distinguish it from the indigo-blue linen biaude worn by peasants and agricultural workers, and, when combined with a black felt hat, it was a uniform and identifying mark.
Villetteは、1974年に閉鎖されるまで牛や羊など家畜業者が集まったパリのLa Villetteの家畜・食肉市場のことですが、この市場で働く人たちが着ていた仕事着やその仕事着に使われるリネン生地までもを指す名称になり、maquignonが着る作業用の上っぱりのコートはBlouse Villetteと呼ばれていました。
Villette was the name of the La Villette livestock and meat market in Paris, where livestock traders gathered to trade cattle, sheep, and other livestock until it closed in 1974. The name also came to refer to the work clothes worn by the market workers and the linen fabric used for those clothes, and the work coat worn by Maquignon was called Blouse Villette.
細番手のリネンを稠密に織り上げインディゴ染料で染めあげた後に、黒色の顔料で表面を黒く覆いインディゴを閉じ込めた独特の風合い。着込んでいくにつれてしわの山の部分や、擦れの多い部分の表面の黒が落ち、インディゴが現れる深い色合い
Fine linen is densely woven and dyed with indigo dye, then the surface is covered with black pigment to lock the indigo in, creating a unique texture. As you wear it, the black on the surface of the wrinkled areas and areas that are frequently rubbed fades, revealing the deep indigo color.

デッドストックのvillette生地の今は一見するとただの黒のリネンのコート。しかし着込んでいくたびに奥から現れてくるインディゴが入り混じり、変化していくその様はまさにこの世に一つだけの存在。

狭めの間隔でずらりと並べたボタンは、フランスのヴィンテージのcorozo(主にエクアドルのタグワ椰子)。実の中の種子の中の胚乳部分を加工して作られた趣のあるボタン。
19世紀から1950年代にかけてのプラスティック開発以前に、滑らかな手触りと硬さ丈夫さ染色性の良さを利用して、盛んに作られていたボタンです。
