フランスの農村部などで、手作りされた古いリネンのスモックやBiaudeには、テーラーワークを基本にしたパターンと縫製が作り出す立体的で曲線的なデザインと、雰囲気溢れる生地の表情が魅力の一般的なフレンチワークウェアとは別の魅力が溢れています。

Old linen smocks and biaudes, handmade in rural areas of France, have a different appeal to typical French workwear, with three-dimensional, curvaceous designs created using patterns and stitching based on tailoring, and atmospheric fabrics.

一般的に知られるフレンチワークは、都市部とその近郊地域での産業や商業の発展とともに発達し、制服的な意味合いで製造され、支給されたり、購入され着用されました。服飾知識と技術を持った専門家によるデザインとパターン製作や、縫製や工程の管理を基本とした、工業生産品のワークウェア自体が立派な商品であり、産業革命や近代化の結晶でした。

The French workwear as it is commonly known developed with the development of industry and commerce in urban areas and their suburbs, and was manufactured, issued, or purchased and worn as a kind of uniform. 今も食糧自給率が120％を超え、欧州連合（EU）一の農業生産国のフランスには牧畜に従事する人々が作り上げたBiaudeや、農家の室内着や寝間着になったスモックなど豊かな感性に彩られたフランス独自の様々な衣料や仕事着が自らの手で、手作りされていました。

生地は1950年頃のフランスの素朴なリネン。栽培も紡績も製織もすべてフランス国内で行われていた頃のもの。今では国をまたいだ分業化が発達したリネン産業では、このようにすべてをフランス国内で行ったリネンは貴重になってしまいました。

The fabric is a rustic French linen dating from around 1950. It was produced at a time when cultivation, spinning, and weaving were all carried out entirely within France. In today’s linen industry, where cross-border division of labor has become widespread, linen produced entirely within France in this manner has become a rarity.

様々な色の組み合わせの中でも、とりわけフランスらしさが感じられるオフホワイトと赤のギンガムチェック。この生地を見ると、ギンガムの発祥はマレー語の「Genggang」ではなく、フランス北西部、ブルターニュのイギリス海峡に臨む田舎町Guingampなのだという説に1票を投じたくなります。

Among the various color combinations, the off-white and red gingham check is particularly French. Looking at this fabric, I would like to cast my vote for the theory that gingham originated not from the Malay word “Genggang” but from Guingamp, a rural town in Brittany, northwest of France, facing the English Channel.

Linen from an era when much of the work was still done by hand and craftsman’s intuition. Gingham Plaid has a soft face woven with threads that have a rustic look and taste.

フランスはリネンの原料のフラックスの一大生産地で、自身の上質なフレンチリネンのブランドを誇るとともに、今なお世界のリネン原料のフラックス（亜麻）生産の80％以上を生み出し続ける昔からのリネン大国です。しかしそのフランスも今では、原料栽培以外の工程（特に潤紡よる紡糸はほとんど中国）は国外で行われる事が殆どで、この生地が作られた頃のように、純粋なフレンチリネン生地が手に入る事は少なくなってしまいました。

France is a major producer of flax, the raw material for linen. It boasts its own high-quality French linen brands and remains a long-standing linen powerhouse, continuing to account for over 80% of the world’s flax production. However, even in France today, most processes other than raw material cultivation―particularly wet spinning, which is largely done in China―are carried out abroad. As a result, it has become rare to find pure French linen fabric like that produced in the past.

素朴で自然な生地には、パリやリヨンなどの都市部の勤め人が求める洗練や洒落っ気とは全く違った農業大国フランスの骨太さが伝わる良さに溢れています。

The simple, natural fabric exudes a robust quality that is completely different from the sophistication and stylishness sought by office workers in cities like Paris and Lyon, conveying the robust character of France, a major agricultural nation.

柔らかなフォルムは、袖口やヨーク周りやカフスにとられたギャザーの作り出す柔らかさ。たたみ込まれた膨らみが印象を丸くします。

The soft shape is created by gathers around the cuffs, yoke and sleeves. The folds give it a rounded look.

比較的コンパクトな肩周りからギャザーなどでボリュームを増していき1.8mもある裾まわりに繋がる柔らかなフォルム。

The soft form starts out relatively compact around the shoulders, but gradually gains volume with gathers and other elements, eventually culminating in a 1.8m hem.

衿を1枚で作らずに強くカーブした2枚のパーツを継いだ、身頃に沿う形のフラットながらもボリュームのある衿。この衿も立体的なパターン発想が作り出したフランスならではのもの。

The collar is not made from one piece, but from two strongly curved pieces joined together, creating a flat yet voluminous collar that fits the body of the garment. This collar is also unique to France, created from a three-dimensional pattern idea.

手で縫いとめたuselessポケットもちょっとしたアクセント。

The hand-sewn useless pocket adds a nice touch.

間隔を詰めてずらりとボタンを配した、印象深いルック。

A striking look with closely spaced buttons in a row.

選んだボタンは、vintageやantiqueのリネン生地を包んだくるみボタン。数種類のリネン生地をランダムに選んで、同じくvintageのくるみボタンに包んでずらりと縫い付けています。

The buttons I chose are vintage and antique linen covered buttons. I randomly selected several different types of linen fabric, wrapped them in vintage covered buttons, and sewed them on in a row.

糸の太さや生地の織り方が違ったり、色のくすみがあったりする様ざなな似て異なる生地のボタン。このスモックの生地に刻まれたのと同じような長い時間の痕跡を示してくれます。

The buttons are made of different fabrics, with different thread thicknesses, weaves, and dull colors, all showing the same traces of time that are engraved into the fabric of this smock.

ボタンホールもリネンコードを手でかがった少し素朴な味のあるもの。

The buttonholes are also hand-sewn from linen cord, giving them a slightly rustic feel.

手でまつりつけたライニング。手の温もりではなくストイックさが伝わる不揃いなステッチ、縫い皺の表情や生地のコントラストが乾いた奥行きを作り出します。適度な厚みのある未晒しの素朴な風合いとしわが魅力の、インドで織られたライニングは、表地とのコントラストと清潔感を作り出してくれます。

Lining sewn by hand. The uneven stitching, which conveys stoicism rather than hand warmth, the expression of the stitching wrinkles, and the contrast of the fabrics create a dry depth. The lining, woven in India, with its rustic texture and wrinkled charm of unbleached fabric of moderate thickness, creates a contrast with the outer fabric and a sense of cleanliness.

ヘムを軽くするために、縫いつけずに浮かせてつけたライニングの裾。適度なボリュームを持たせるために深い見返しをつけ、ハンドステッチでアクセントを添えています。

The hem is floated and not sewn to make the hem lighter. Deep facings are added to give the garment just the right amount of volume, and hand stitching adds an accent.

脇も袖もちょっと面倒な袋縫い。その縫い代をまつるハンドステッチの作るふくよかな陰影。

French seams can be a bit of a hassle, whether on the underarms or the sleeves. The rich shading created by the hand-stitched seam allowances.

ミシンで縫えば数分の仕事に、その十数倍の時間をかけたことの意味は、きっとあるはず。

Blind stitching by hand to sew the linings together. It must be meaningful that we spent more than ten times as much time on a job that would take only a few minutes if sewn with a sewing machine.

The uneven stitching conveys a sense of stoicism rather than the warmth of the hand, and the texture of the creases and contrast in the fabric create a dry sense of depth.

Vintageの生地と、今はもう作られなくなった仕事着のフォルム。そこに乾いた手の仕事と現代性を融合させて作り上げた、「古くて新しく、新しいけど古い」もの。

Vintage fabrics and the shapes of work clothes that are no longer made are combined with dry handwork and modernity to create something that is both “old and new, new but old.”
