英国で生まれ、今でも綿々と受け継がれているブレザージャケット。語源と言われるものが、1830年頃のケンブリッジ大学のボート部のユニフォームや英国軍艦ブレザー号のユニフォームという事が示す通り自分の属する学校やクラブを示すために、それぞれの紋章を象ったエンブレムを飾ったり、スクールカラーを取り入れたりして仲間の存在感と結束力を高める制服として用いられてきました。

The blazer jacket was born in England and has been handed down from generation to generation. The word “blazer” is said to have originated in the uniforms of the Cambridge University rowing team and the British warship Blazer around 1830. It was used as a uniform to enhance the presence and unity of fellow students.

ボート、ポロ、クリケットなど、英国の伝統を色濃く反映したスポーツでは、各競技の機能的なユニフォームの開発に合わせて、各学校が定めたクラブストライプの入った観客用ジャケットを制作し、競技者や観客が応援の意味を込めて着用しました。それぞれの学校の関係者がお揃いのジャケットを着込んで集まる様は、これらの競技の風景に伝統的な色を添えています。

In sports with strong British traditions, such as rowing, polo, and cricket, in line with the development of functional uniforms for each sport, each school produced spectator jackets with a defined club stripe, which were worn by competitors and spectators as a sign of support.The way the officials from each school gather in their matching jackets adds a traditional color to the scenery of these competitions.

クラブストライプで仕立てられたブレザーは、パブリックスクールや大学のアスレチッククラブの選手や応援団が、スカーフに採用したストライプに端を発するもので、ボート部やクリケット部、あるいは学校の親睦会など、様々なクラブのものがあります。厳密に言えばそれぞれ呼称が違うはずですが、オクスフォードとケンブリッジの対戦で有名なテムズ川で開催されるボート競技、ヘンリー・ロイヤル・レガッタ（Henley Royal Regatta）でのイメージが定着してポピュラーになった事から、ボーティング(Boating)・ブレザーと総称される事が殆どとなっています。

Blazers tailored with club stripes originated from the stripes adopted for scarves by athletes and cheering squads of athletic clubs in private schools and universities, whether rowing clubs, cricket clubs, or school fraternities.Strictly speaking, each of them should be called by a different name, but since the image of the Henley Royal Regatta, a rowing competition held on the River Thames famous for the match between Oxford and Cambridge, has become popular, it is collectively called the boating blazer. This is why it is often referred to as a boating blazer.

Taunton Schoolは1847年に設立されたカレッジで、イングランドでも長い歴史を持つ古い学校です。男性・イギリス国教徒・貴族出身者のみに入学を許すなど、差別的な入学条件を課していたオクスフォードやケンブリッジと異なり、Dissenter(非イギリス国教会=カソリック=主にプロテスタント)に向けて開かれた学校で、公的資金を受けない私立学校(Independent School)として設立されました。学校はその開かれた精神を象徴するように1976年に英国で最初の男女共学のIndependent Schoolとなり、その後ジュニアスクールに改編されて現在にいたります。

Taunton School was founded in 1847 and is one of the oldest schools in England with a long history. Unlike Oxford and Cambridge, which imposed discriminatory admission requirements such as allowing only males, Anglicans, and aristocrats to enter, Taunton School is open to Dissenters (non-Anglicans = Catholics = mainly Protestants) and was established as a private school (Independent School) that does not receive public funding. It was founded as an Independent School.The school became the first co-educational Independent School in the UK in 1976, symbolizing its open-mindedness, and was later converted to a Junior School.

このブレザーの最大の魅力はやはり、学校の紋章の色を表すコントラストのはっきりしたクラブストライプに詰まっています。ブルーのベースにブラックとゴールドイエローのストライプを組み合わせたストライプは、伝統ある名門校の誇りを象徴し、100年以上の時を経た今でも古びれず、堂々とした美しさを見せてくれるブレザーです。

The main attraction of this blazer is still packed in the distinctly contrasting club stripes that represent the colors of the school’s coat of arms.The blue base with black and golden yellow stripes symbolizes the pride of a prestigious and traditional school.After more than 100 years, this blazer is still timeless and shows its majestic beauty.

このブレザーのもう一つの見所は英国伝統の本領を発揮した、着た時にストライプが首に向かって収束していくように見える生地使いと、カッティングの見事さです。アームホールを調整するカッティングで出来るドレープが生む、ストライプの曲がり具合が立体感を強調し、独特の雰囲気を作り上げています。

The other highlight of this blazer is the use of fabric that makes the stripes seem to converge toward the neck when worn and the superb cutting that demonstrates the true nature of the British tradition. The drape created by the cutting that adjusts the armholes emphasizes the three-dimensional effect of the stripes and creates a unique atmosphere.

後ろは逆に、背中心にはぎの無い１枚仕立ての背身頃で、ストライプを途切れさせずに際立たせる配慮がなされている上に、フロントのストライプが背中のストライプと繋がるのはもちろんのこと、襟のストライプも背中のストライプとちゃんと繋がるように絶妙な調整が行われているのも見事です。

The back of the garment is a single piece with no joint in the center of the back. Care has been taken to make the stripes stand out without interruption.The stripes on the front connect with the stripes on the back, and of course, the stripes on the collar are also exquisitely adjusted to properly connect with the stripes on the back.

ボタンの無い筒そでの袖口を、開きに作り変えた手仕事ならではの変形の本切羽です。元々袖丈の調整用の遊びや生地余りが全く無い仕立てなので、額縁など作り得ず、縫い代も十分取れないところを、ギリギリをやりくりしながらの作りです。でも、こうすることで得られる袖口の表情の豊かさは、着こなす上での楽しさを倍増させてくれるはず。

The cuffs of the cylindrical sleeves without buttons are transformed into openings in this hand-crafted Honkiriba. Since there is no play or excess fabric for adjusting the sleeve length, it is impossible to make a frame or enough seam allowance, so I had to make do with the last minute.However, the richness of the expression of the cuffs obtained in this way should double the enjoyment of wearing the garment.

レジメンタルストライプに配されたクレストのように、全体に散らばる大小様々色様々なdarningは、100年の時を経た枯れた渋さを、裏切るような全体に散らばるチクチク仕事。着込まれたことによる擦り切れと、美味しい（良質の）ウールがご馳走のいたずら者の宴の痕は、普通なら忌み嫌われるものですが、120箇所近くを丹念にダーニングで飾り、隠すべきダメージを逆手にとって、意図的には作り出せない時間の贈り物の一つとして捉えたALTERATIONのかたちです。

Like the crest on a regimental stripe, the darning of various sizes and colors scattered throughout is a prickly work that betrays the withered austerity of 100 years of age. The wear and tear caused by being worn in, and the marks of a party of mischief-makers who feast on delicious (good quality) wool, would normally be frowned upon, but by painstakingly decorating nearly 120 places with darning, and taking advantage of the damage that should be hidden, we have captured it as one of the gifts of time that cannot be created intentionally. This is the form of ALTERATION.

エンブレムのモチーフとなっている竜はサクソン人の国、イングランドの紋章の白い竜(Gwiber)。アーサー王伝説でウエールズに退却したヴォーティガンに、魔法使いマーリンが、呼び出した白い竜と赤い竜が争いを見せ、赤い竜が勝ったと伝えられています。マーリンは赤い竜(Y Ddraig Goch)はブリトン人(ウェールズ、白い竜はサクソン人(イングランド)、戦いはコーンウォールの猪(アーサー王)によって決着すると告げ、その予言通りにアーサー王がサクソン人を破りました。因みにイングランドの語源は、ドイツ(ゲルマン)から渡ってきたサクソン人の部族、アングル人、ジュート人、サクソン人からアングロ・サクソンという人種の呼び名が作られ、そのアングロ人の国=アングロ・ランドがイングランドの語源となりました。

The motif of the emblem is the white dragon (Gwiber), the emblem of England, the land of the Saxons. Merlin told him that the red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) was a Briton (Wales) and the white dragon was a Saxon (England), and that the battle would be settled by the Boar of Cornwall (King Arthur), and as predicted, King Arthur defeated the Saxons.In case you are wondering, the word England originated from the Saxon tribes from Germany (Germanic), the Angles, the Jutes, and the Saxons, who created the racial name Anglo-Saxon.That country of Anglo people = Anglo Land became the origin of the word England.

100年前のかっちりとしたメイドトゥーメジャーの職人仕事。ややかっちりし過ぎの硬い芯地と肩のパッドを取り除き軽い生地に取り替えています。デフォルトの少し長めの着丈を少し調整し、変則的なサイドベンツを作った事で、幅広い着こなしの似合う軽快で現代的なフォルムのジャケットに。

Made to measure craftsmanship that is 100 years old. The slightly too stiff interlining and shoulder padding have been removed and replaced with a lighter fabric.The default length of the jacket, which is a bit long, has been slightly adjusted and irregular side vents have been created to give the jacket a light, contemporary shape that suits a wide range of outfits.

フラワーホールを広げて、襟を立てて止められるようにすると共に、ボタンは合わせて5つに。手仕事だからこその変則仕様のベントや切羽、手縫い皺も美しい柔らかな仕様です。

The flower holes have been widened to allow the collar to be stopped upright, and the buttons are five in total.It has a beautiful soft specification with irregular vents, cut wings, and hand-sewn wrinkles because of the handwork.

本切羽に手かがりで作ったボタンホールを、やや小ぶりのヴィンテージのメタルボタンが飾ります。ヘムラインをラウンドしたシェイプに変更し、ポケットにも裏地をつけて、丸みと膨らみを加えた形に。

Small vintage metal buttons decorate the buttonholes made by hand on the surgeon’s cuffs.The hemline is changed to a round shape and the pockets are also lined to add roundness and fullness to the shape.

ライニングの無い1枚仕立てに、生成りの裏地と内ポケットを。ラスティックなコットンブロードは、適度な張りとシワ感が有り、インドで織られた素朴な糸の表情が魅力です。

It was originally made as a single piece without a lining, but now it has a raw silk lining and an inside pocket. The rustic cotton broadcloth has a moderate tension and wrinkles, and the rustic look of the yarn woven in India is attractive.

当時、このような名門校に通われた方々は、当然裕福な方が多く、さらにその中でも選ばれた少数の人々しか手にいれる（仕立てる）事が許されないはずのこういった、クラブブレザーは誇りと思い出の象徴のはず。同窓会や母校の集まりには勇んで着込んで行かなければいけない物ですし、オーナーの存命中は現役の勝負服です。死後も思い出とともに箪笥やクローゼット、あるいは地下室で保管され、捨てられたり、ましてや古着商に売り渡す事など考えられないというものであろうだけに、こういう形で私達が扱えた事自体、かなりの僥倖で、この1着もとても珍しく貴重な物だ思います。

At that time, many of the people who attended such a prestigious school were naturally wealthy, and a club blazer like this, which only a select few were allowed to have (or tailor), should be a symbol of pride and memories. It’s something you have to wear to alumni reunions and alma mater gatherings, and during the owner’s lifetime, it’s something you can wear to win. Even after his death, it would have been stored in a chest, closet, or basement with his memories, and it would have been unthinkable to throw it away or even sell it to a second-hand clothing dealer. Therefore, it was quite fortuitous that we were able to handle it in this way, and I think this piece is very rare and valuable.
