英国で生まれ、今でも綿々と受け継がれているブレザージャケット。語源と言われるものが、1830年頃のケンブリッジ大学のボート部のユニフォームや英国軍艦ブレザー号のユニフォームという事が示す通り自分の属する学校やクラブを示すために、それぞれの紋章を象ったエンブレムを飾ったり、スクールカラーを取り入れたりして仲間の存在感と結束力を高める制服として用いられてきました。

The blazer jacket was born in England and has been handed down from generation to generation.The word “blazer” is said to have originated in the uniforms of the Cambridge University rowing team and the British warship Blazer around 1830. The blazer jacket was used as a uniform to show the school or club to which one belonged, and to enhance the presence and unity of one’s fellow students by decorating it with emblems of the respective coats of arms and incorporating the school colors.

中でもボートやポロ、クリケットなど、英国の伝統を色濃く映すスポーツでは、それぞれの競技における機能的なユニフォームの発達と同じように、競技者自身や観戦者が応援の意味を込めて着用するスペクテイターウェアとして、それぞれの学校が定めたクラブストライプを使ったジャケットが作られ、今でもこうした競技の風景に伝統の色を加えています。

In sports that reflect a strong British tradition, such as rowing, polo, and cricket, the development of functional uniforms for each sport was matched by the creation of spectator jackets with the club stripes set by each school, worn by competitors and spectators as a sign of support. クラブストライプで仕立てられたブレザーは、パブリックスクールや大学のアスレチッククラブの選手や応援団が、スカーフに採用したストライプに端を発するもので、ボート部やクリケット部、あるいは学校の親睦会など、様々なクラブのものがあります。厳密に言えばそれぞれ呼称が違うはずですが、オクスフォードとケンブリッジの対戦で有名なテムズ川で開催されるボート競技、ヘンリー・ロイヤル・レガッタ（Henley Royal Regatta）でのイメージが定着してポピュラーになった事から、ボーティング(Boating)・ブレザーと総称される事が殆どとなっています。

クラブブレザーの見所は英国伝統の本領を発揮した、着た時にストライプが首に向かって収束していくように見える生地使いと、カッティングの見事さです。アームホールを調整するカッティングで出来るドレープが生む、ストライプの曲がり具合が立体感を強調し、独特の雰囲気を作り上げています。

昔の硬い芯を使ったかっちりとしたメイドトゥーメジャーの職人仕事。ややかっちりし過ぎの芯地と肩のパッドを取り除き軽い生地に取り替えています。変則的なサイドベンツを作った事で、幅広い着こなしの似合う軽快で現代的なフォルムのジャケットに。フラワーホールを広げて、襟を立てて止められるようにすると共に、ボタンは合わせて5つに。手仕事だからこその変則仕様のベントや切羽、手縫い皺も美しい柔らかな仕様です。

Made to measure craftsmanship with the old hard core. The slightly too stiff interlining and shoulder padding have been removed and replaced with a lighter fabric. The irregular side vents give the jacket a light, contemporary form that suits a wide range of styles.

The flower holes have been widened to allow the collar to be stopped upright, and the buttons are five in total. It has a beautiful soft specification with irregular vents, cut wings, and hand-sewn wrinkles because of the handwork.

ヘムラインをラウンドしたシェイプに変更し、ポケットにも裏地をつけて、丸みと膨らみを加えた形に。

Small vintage metal buttons decorate the buttonholes made by hand on the main wings.

ライニングの無い1枚仕立てに、生成りの裏地と内ポケットを。ラスティックなコットンブロードは、適度な張りとシワ感が有り、インドで織られた素朴な糸の表情が魅力です。

当時、このような名門校に通われた方々は、当然裕福な方が多く、さらにその中でも選ばれた少数の人々しか手にいれる（仕立てる）事が許されないはずのこういった、クラブブレザーは誇りと思い出の象徴のはず。同窓会や母校の集まりには勇んで着込んで行かなければいけない物ですし、オーナーの存命中は現役の勝負服です。死後も思い出とともに箪笥やクローゼット、あるいは地下室で保管され、捨てられたり、ましてや古着商に売り渡す事など考えられないというものであろうだけに、こういう形で私達が扱えた事自体、かなりの僥倖で、この1着もとても珍しく貴重な物だ思います。
