フランスの農村部などで、手作りされた古いリネンのスモックやBiaudeには、テーラーワークを基本にしたパターンと縫製が作り出す立体的で曲線的なデザインと、雰囲気溢れる生地の表情が魅力の一般的なフレンチワークウェアとは別の魅力が溢れています。

Old linen smocks and biaudes, handmade in rural areas of France, have a different appeal to typical French workwear, with three-dimensional, curvaceous designs created using patterns and stitching based on tailoring, and atmospheric fabrics.

一般的に知られるフレンチワークは、都市部とその近郊地域での産業や商業の発展とともに発達し、制服的な意味合いで製造され、支給されたり、購入され着用されました。服飾知識と技術を持った専門家によるデザインとパターン製作や、縫製や工程の管理を基本とした、工業生産品のワークウェア自体が立派な商品であり、産業革命や近代化の結晶でした。

The French workwear as it is commonly known developed with the development of industry and commerce in urban areas and their suburbs, and was manufactured, issued, or purchased and worn as a kind of uniform. Based on the design and pattern making by experts with clothing knowledge and skills, and the management of sewing and processes, industrially produced workwear was itself a fine product, a crystallization of the Industrial Revolution and modernization.

一方、周辺の農村部などでは、生活や仕事着が近代化されるのは1950年代の以降でした。

今も食糧自給率が120％を超え、欧州連合（EU）一の農業生産国のフランスには牧畜に従事する人々が作り上げたBiaudeや、農家の室内着や寝間着になったスモックなど豊かな感性に彩られたフランス独自の様々な衣料や仕事着が自らの手で、手作りされていました。

Meanwhile, in the surrounding rural areas, it was only after the 1950s that lifestyles and work clothes were modernized.

France, which still has a food self-sufficiency rate of over 120% and is the number one agricultural producer in the European Union (EU), has a wide variety of uniquely French clothing and work clothes that are colored by rich sensibility and are handmade by the people themselves, such as the Biaude made by people working in livestock farming, and smocks that became indoor wear and nightwear for farmers.

生地は機械技術がまだまだ発達しきっていない100年以上前の、手仕事で麻を処理し、糸を紡ぎ、手動織機で織り上げた味のあるベッドリネン。

The fabric is a tasteful bed linen that was made over 100 years ago, when mechanical technology was not yet fully developed. Hemp was hand-processed, spun into thread, and woven on a manual loom.

綿素材を輸入に頼るのに比して自国での栽培が盛んで入手が容易で身近なフランスのリネン。しっかり洗い込まれた年月の経過を映す様々な質感と色合いが入り混じる深い趣を持つ生地は、枯れた風合いがさらに味わいを高めています。

Compared to a country that relies on imports for cotton materials, French linen is widely grown in France, making it easy to obtain and familiar. The fabric has a deep flavor with a mixture of various textures and colors that reflect the passage of time after being thoroughly washed, and the worn texture enhances its charm even more.

フランスはリネンの原料のフラックスの一大生産地で、自身の上質なフレンチリネンのブランドを誇るとともに、今なお世界のリネン原料のフラックス（亜麻）生産の75％以上を生み出し続ける昔からのリネン大国です。しかしそのフランスも今では、原料栽培以外の工程（特に潤紡よる紡糸はほとんど中国）は国外で行われる事が殆どで、この生地が作られた頃のように、純粋なフレンチリネン生地が手に入る事は少なくなってしまいました。

France is a major producer of flux, the raw material for linen, and is proud of its own brand of high quality French linen. However, even in France, most of the processes other than the cultivation of the raw material (especially the spinning by moisture spinning, which is mostly done in China) are now done outside of France, and pure French linen fabric is no longer available as it was when this fabric was made.

平織りにしっとりと織られた自然な生地には、パリやリヨンなどの都市部の勤め人が求める洗練や洒落っ気とは全く違った農業大国フランスの骨太さが伝わる、素朴な良さに溢れています。

The soft, natural plain weave fabric is full of simple quality, conveying the strength of France, an agricultural powerhouse, which is quite different from the sophistication and chic that city workers in cities like Paris and Lyon expect.

リネンと聞いてイメージされる硬さやざらつき、張りのある手触りといった予想を覆す、使いこまれた柔らかでくったりとした風合い。

It has a soft and soft texture that overturns expectations of hardness, roughness, and a taut feel that one might expect when hearing the word “linen”.

麻は使えば使い込むほど柔かさ、光沢感が増すと言われます。オールドリネンがもてはやされる事が示すように、リネンはつかいこまれた後が最も美しいのです。

肩に接ぎの無い1枚仕立ての特殊な仕様の珍しい造りで作った肩ヨーク。背中を経地に合わせたヨークのパーツが、体に沿って前に回り込んでくるにつれて、しだいに生地方向が変化し、肩から胸にかけてがバイアス方向の生地使いとなります。肩の傾斜に馴染むとともに、腕の動きにも沿う伸縮性を持った、とても理にかなった作りです。

The shoulder yoke is made in a unique way with no seams at the shoulders. As the yoke parts, which are aligned with the longitudinal direction of the back, wrap around the body and forward, the fabric direction gradually changes, and the fabric from the shoulders to the chest is in the bias direction. It is a very logical design that fits the slope of the shoulders and has elasticity that follows the movement of the arms.

ナチュラルな肩のフォルムを作り出し、広い身幅と肩をバランスよく繋ぐパターンはフランスならではの発想だと思います。

The pattern that creates a natural shoulder shape and connects the wide body width with the shoulders in a balanced way is an idea that is unique to France.

柔らかなフォルムは、袖口やヨーク周りやカフスにとられたギャザーの作り出す柔らかさ。たたみ込まれた膨らみが印象を丸くします。

The soft shape is created by gathers around the cuffs, yoke and sleeves. The folds give it a rounded look.

比較的コンパクトな肩周りからギャザーなどでボリュームを増していき1.8mもある裾まわりに繋がる柔らかなフォルム。

The soft form starts out relatively compact around the shoulders, but gradually gains volume with gathers and other elements, eventually culminating in a 1.8m hem.

古いスモックを模した胸の部分の切り替えパネルに使った生地を採ったのも質感の違うアンティークのベッドリネン。白度や糸の感じが少し違う白のコンビネーション。

The fabric used for the chest panel, which imitates an old smock, is also an antique bed linen with a different texture. The combination of whites has slightly different whiteness and thread feel.

配した生地に残るのは、リネン類によく用いられたdrawn workと呼ばれる、フランスの手刺繍。緯糸を部分的に抜き取った残りの経糸を巻き留めたり、渡した糸にステッチを行い、描き出された手の込んだ模様。

What remains on the fabric is French hand embroidery known as drawn work, often used on linen. Intricate patterns are created by stitching the remaining warp threads after partially removing the weft threads, or by wrapping and fastening the threads.

パネル切り替えや押さえのステッチ、見返しの押さえステッチ、ボタンホールなど、手縫いならではの凹凸が作る皺が深みを生みます。

The wrinkles created by the unevenness that is unique to hand sewing, such as panel transitions, presser stitches, presser stitches on the facings, and buttonholes, create depth.

衿を1枚で作らずに強くカーブした2枚のパーツを継いだ、身頃に沿う形のフラットながらもボリュームのある衿。この衿も立体的なパターン発想が作り出したフランスならではのもの。

The collar is not made from one piece, but from two strongly curved pieces joined together, creating a flat yet voluminous collar that fits the body of the garment. This collar is also unique to France, created from a three-dimensional pattern idea.

手で縫いとめたuselessポケットもちょっとしたアクセント。

間隔を詰めてずらりとボタンを配した、印象深いルック。

A striking look with closely spaced buttons in a row.

選んだボタンは、vintageやantiqueのリネン生地を包んだくるみボタン。数種類のリネン生地をランダムに選んで、同じくvintageのくるみボタンに包んでずらりと縫い付けています。

The buttons I chose are vintage and antique linen covered buttons. I randomly selected several different types of linen fabric, wrapped them in vintage covered buttons, and sewed them on in a row.

糸の太さや生地の織り方が違ったり、色のくすみがあったりする様ざなな似て異なる生地のボタン。このスモックの生地に刻まれたのと同じような長い時間の痕跡を示してくれます。

The buttons are made of different fabrics, with different thread thicknesses, weaves, and dull colors, all showing the same traces of time that are engraved into the fabric of this smock.

ボタンホールもリネンコードを手でかがった少し素朴な味のあるもの。

The buttonholes are also hand-sewn from linen cord, giving them a slightly rustic feel.

手でまつりつけたライニング。手の温もりではなくストイックさが伝わる不揃いなステッチ、縫い皺の表情や生地のコントラストが乾いた奥行きを作り出します。適度な厚みのある未晒しの素朴な風合いとしわが魅力の、インドで織られたライニングは、表地とのコントラストと清潔感を作り出してくれます。

Lining sewn by hand. The uneven stitching, which conveys stoicism rather than hand warmth, the expression of the stitching wrinkles, and the contrast of the fabrics create a dry depth. The lining, woven in India, with its rustic texture and wrinkled charm of unbleached fabric of moderate thickness, creates a contrast with the outer fabric and a sense of cleanliness.

ヘムを軽くするために、縫いつけずに浮かせてつけたライニングの裾。適度なボリュームを持たせるために深い見返しをつけ、ハンドステッチでアクセントを添えています。

The hem is floated and not sewn to make the hem lighter. Deep facings are added to give the garment just the right amount of volume, and hand stitching adds an accent.

脇も袖も肩もちょっと面倒な袋縫い。脇にはその縫い代をまつるハンドステッチの作るふくよかな陰影。

The sides, sleeves and shoulders are all stitched using a slightly tedious process. The hand stitching that joins the seams at the sides creates a plump shadow.

antiqueのリネン生地を1.5～2mmの細かなステッチでpatchしたヘムやカフスのトリミングのアクセント。

The hem and cuff trimmings are accented with antique linen fabric patched with fine 1.5 to 2 mm stitches.

ミシンで縫えば数分の仕事に、その十数倍の時間をかけたことの意味は、きっとあるはず。

Blind stitching by hand to sew the linings together. It must be meaningful that we spent more than ten times as much time on a job that would take only a few minutes if sewn with a sewing machine.

手の温もりではなくストイックさを伝える不揃いなステッチ、縫い皺の表情や生地のコントラストが乾いた奥行きを作り出します。

The uneven stitching conveys a sense of stoicism rather than the warmth of the hand, and the texture of the creases and contrast in the fabric create a dry sense of depth.

antiqueの生地と、今はもう作られなくなった仕事着のフォルム。そこに乾いた手の仕事と現代性を融合させて作り上げた、「古くて新しく、新しいけど古い」もの。

Antique fabrics and the shapes of work clothes that are no longer made are combined with dry handwork and modernity to create something that is both “old and new, new but old.”
