高級リネンの代名詞として、最上級の証の「アイリッシュリネン」。

しかしアイルランドでのリネン生産は、原料となるフラックス(flax=亜麻)の栽培が60年以上も前の1960年代に途絶え、フラックスから糸を紡ぐ紡績も、1990年頃までに全く行われなくなってしまいました。

Irish linen is synonymous with luxury linen and is a sign of the highest quality.

However, the cultivation of flax, the raw material for linen production in Ireland, ceased more than 60 years ago in the 1960s, and the spinning of linen from flax ceased around 1990.

本来アイリッシュリネンは、ベルギーから栽培法が伝わり、アイルランド北部のアルスター(Ulster)地方(ドニゴール(Donagal)州やハードマンズ(Herdmans)社のあったティロン(Tyrone)州など9州）でさかんに栽培されていたフラックスを、アイルランドで紡績して糸を紡ぎ、アイルランドで織り上げたものでした。

今現在アイリッシュリネンとして流通している物は、主にフランスやベルギーのフラックスを、中国などで糸に紡ぎ、アイリッシュ・リネン・ギルドに加盟している業社と、その業者が認可した工場(アイルランド以外の国の方が多い）で織り上げたものです。

Originally, Irish linen was made by spinning flax, which was cultivated in Ulster in the north of Ireland (Donagal and Tyrone, where Herdmans was located), into yarn and weaving it in Ireland.

Nowadays, Irish linen is mainly made from flax from France and Belgium, spun into yarn in China and other countries, and woven in Irish Linen Guild member companies and their authorized mills (often outside of Ireland).

こうしてをはどれほど望まれても、資金を投入しても、新たには手に入れることの叶わない物となりました。

And so the curtain has fallen on the “real” Irish linen, which no matter how much you want it or how much money you put into it, you just can’t get it again.

そんな中で、まだ「本物」の「アイリッシュリネン」が作られていた頃のヴィンテージの発見こそが、どんなに望んでも手にすることのできない物を、手にいれられる唯一の方法に違いありません。

In such a situation, discovering vintage Irish linen from the time when “real” Irish linen was still being made must be the only way to get what you can never have, no matter how much you want it.

大戦と1949年のイギリス連邦からの離脱で、経済的にも疲弊しきっていたアイルランドにとって、「アイリッシュリネン」は外貨を獲得するための貴重な輸出品でした。しかし、その頃の「アイリッシュリネン」は、あくまでも品質と風合いの良い一般品用の生地で、特別に高価なものでもありませんでした。この生地はその頃、フランスに輸出された生地のデッドストックです。

Irish linen” was a valuable export for Ireland, which was economically exhausted after the Great War and its withdrawal from the British Commonwealth in 1949, in order to earn foreign currency. However, at that time, Irish linen was only a fabric for general use with good quality and texture, and was not particularly expensive. This fabric is a dead stock of fabric exported to France at that time.

縦糸に、アイリッシュリネンならではの細番手に紡いだ糸をインディゴで染めた2本と、インディゴと生成りをメランジ状に紡いだ太番手の糸1本を組み合わせて織り上げた、ピケのように見える縦ストライプが現れるコードストライプ生地。もう誰にも新たに作れない本物のアイリッシュリネンをインディゴで染めた素晴らしく特別な組み合わせ。

This cord stripe fabric is woven by combining two fine Irish linen yarns dyed in indigo for the warp and one thicker yarn spun in a melange of indigo and raw silk, resulting in a piqué-like appearance of warp stripes. A wonderful and special combination of genuine Irish linen dyed with indigo, which no one can make anew.

さらにその生地をインディアインクでラフに染め付けて、ブラック～チャコール～ミディアムのグレーとインディゴブルーの入り混じった複雑で奥深い色合いに。

The fabric is then roughly dyed with India ink to create a complex and deep shade of black to charcoal to medium gray and indigo blue.

着込んでいくにつれ、端部やしわになってあたりのつく部分にインディアインクの下のインディゴの色や、その奥の中白が現れていく変化とともに育つ生地。

As the fabric is worn, it grows with the changes, with the indigo color under the India ink and the white of the center of the yarn behind it appearing on the edges and wrinkled areas where it is worn.

襟を囲むpatchの1.2-1.5mmの細かな手のステッチ。全て手かがりのボタンホール。手の温もりや素朴さとは全く違う乾いた手仕事。でもその自然な乱れが作り出す表情は、ミシンには作り出せない味を生みます。

1.2-1.5mm fine hand stitching on patch surrounding collar. All the buttonholes are hand-worked. Dry handwork that is completely different from the warmth and simplicity of the hand. But the expression created by the natural disorder creates a taste that cannot be created by a sewing machine.

裏えりを縫うリネンのハンドステッチのコントラストも粋なアクセント。

The red linen hand stitching on the back gutter is also a stylish accent.

1930-1940年代のダブルブレストのワークジャケットの原型をベースに、前身頃の合わせのラインを曲線的にし、袖の作りにアレンジを加えたワークジャケット。

アンティーク生地で包んだreinforced buttonの並ぶ前身頃のfacingは、表から見えませんが、なかなか趣のある姿。

選んだボタンは、vintageボタンの中でも1番人気が高く、1つがビッグマック1-1.5個分ぐらいが相場のフランスのハンティングジャケットに使われていたボタン。犬、馬、鹿、猪、狐、狼。狩る側と獲物が入り混じったヴィンテージの動物レリーフボタン。

16mmの小ぶりのものから、あえて様々な素材と、いろんな動物のモチーフをランダムに選んでずらりと縫い付けています。少し塗装が剥がれたり、色のくすみがあったりするボタンには、この生地に刻まれたのと同じような長い時間の痕跡が刻み込まれています。
